Spelling & Reading
Learning
Not every child learns to read, write and spell the same way. Children can learn to read by deciphering, investigate or decoding a word OR they can rely on predicting the words by looking at pictures and the context.
AT AN ENTRY LEVEL
With decoding a child uses the phonetical alphabet knowledge (the sound of each letter) and put the puzzle pieces together what the word may be – we call this blending. For example “A cat in a box”.
With predictable approach the child will look at the picture, and learn words by memory (sight words). For example There is the happy unicorn.
WE TEACH
We teach children to decode the word. Like in mathematics – information is provided about a letter or a sound, and then let the child apply that knowledge in different situations.
This ensure a firm foundation with no room for confusion.
Our main aim is to get the child positive, confident loving the art of spelling. This approach also addresses areas of minor dyslexia and other learning challenges. Our students love the method. It has put the fun back into spelling.
IN PRACTISE
We take the English language words and we categorised them into the different SOUNDS that they make. We then look at the different ways to spell these sounds and why we spell them like that. For example the sound “E” in e-commerce. We can spell the sound 7 different ways if you look at the following words: sleep dream swede defrost happy donkey receive. Our curriculum is designed in parallel with the development of the brain of a child – learning the words that make logical phonetical sense, first. Then we conglomerate sound groups and we look at homophones throughout.
PEAS PEACE PIECE AND PLEASE…..and how to never spell them wrong again.
What about quit quite quiet cute and queque…
All a walk in the park!
